PITREAVIE track star Eilidh Child has cruised into the 400m hurdles final at the Commonwealth Games this afternoon (Tuesday).

The 27-year-old stormed to first place in her heat at Hampden in 55.56 seconds in front of a rapturous home crowd almost two seconds ahead of Canadian Chanice Chase to seal her place in Thursday's final.

Child is the second quickest qualifier behind Jamaican Kaliese Spencer, who won the second heat in a time of 55.45s.

She is the only athlete from the home nations to make the final and afterwards she told the BBC, "I've been dying to get out there and get the first round out of the way. It's good that I have a day off to recover.

"The louder the crowd are the better. For the home straight it's great to have that boost to get you home."

The final of the women's 400m hurdles will take place on Thursday at 8.25pm.
