PITREAVIE hurdler Eilidh Child stormed to a Commonwealth Games silver medal at Hampden last night (Thursday).

The 27-year-old sent a packed national stadium wild as she crossed the finishing line in second place in the 400m hurdles behind world number one Kaliese Spencer of Jamaica.

The poster girl of the Games was the second fastest qualifier for the final behind Spencer and it was the favourites for gold and silver who bagged the top two positions on the podium.

After the race, Child said, "There was nothing more I could have done. It wasn't my fastest race of the year but, in terms of how I executed it, I was very happy.

"The right girl won. I'm delighted to come away with a silver medal."

Meanwhile, Dunfermline Track and Field Club stars Gemma Nicol and Jamie Bowie begin their bid for Games glory tonight (Friday).

They will run in the 4x400m relay events, with the opening heats beginning at 6.40pm.

The finals will take place tomorrow evening (Saturday) and we will have full reaction to Child's silver medal, and the performance of West Fife's Games athletes, in next Thursday's Press Sport.
