PITREAVIE hurdler Eilidh Child hopes to end a memorable year on a high as she goes for European glory in Zurich this weekend.

Just 10 days after the curtain was closed on Glasgow's Commonwealth Games, the 27-year-old silver medalist was back in action yesterday (Wednesday) in the heats for the 400 metres hurdles at the European Athletics Championships.

Although her Hampden heroics of two weeks ago remain fresh in the memory, Child has had little time to savour her triumph and was back in training in Bath during the final weekend of the Games to prepare for what is set to be her final event of 2014. She is one of seven Scots to be selected for the Great Britain and Northern Ireland team and sealed her place in June by clinching her first British title in Birmingham with a time of 55.58 seconds.

Child has previously competed in one European Championship - in Barcelona in 2010 - where she finished eighth. But, ranked as Europe's number one in her event, she will be confident of adding European gold to her medal collection that this year has also yielded bronze in the 4x400m relay at the World Indoor Championships. She also won the Diamond League at Hampden before the Commonwealth Games and was second in the European Team Championships in Germany.

After comfortably winning her heat in a time of 55.32 seconds, Child will return to the track tonight (Thursday) for the semi-finals with the final set to take place on Saturday afternoon. As well as the 400m hurdles, she will run in the 4x400m relay. The qualifying rounds will take place less than an hour before Saturday's 400m hurdles final, with the relay final scheduled to take place on Sunday afternoon.

Meanwhile, another two of West Fife's Commonwealth Games stars will also be back in action this weekend.

Dunfermline Track and Field Club duo Gemma Nicol and Jamie Bowie, who competed in the 4x400m relays in Glasgow, will run at the Scottish National Senior Championships on Saturday and Sunday in Ayrshire.

Nicol, who missed out on a place in the Commonwealth final by just 0.24 seconds, will take part in the 100m, 200m and 400m while Bowie, a Commonwealth finalist, goes in the 200m, 400m and 400m hurdles.
