KAMIKAZE batting cost Sign Plus Dunfermline Knights victory in their East League Division One fixture with Carlton seconds at McKane Park on Saturday.

Chasing 162 for victory Knights were in the pretty handy position at 126 for 4 with Neil Service and Ben Wilkinson both on 30.

However, Wilkinson chased a ball down the leg side and got a top edge offering an easy catch to the keeper, then Service went leg before.

But still Knights needed only 30 runs with 22 overs remaining and all it needed was a cool head.

That simply was not there and a series of poor shots saw wickets tumble.

When the last pair of Mike Snape and David Cooper came together they still required 21 runs and Snape played some lovely shots to take the Fifers to 150 and in sight of victory.

But then Snape hit the ball to fine leg and an awful mix-up saw Carlton emerge winners through a run out.

Earlier, fine bowling by Chris Humphries and Aza Sharif kept the brake on the Carlton batting.

Humphries grabbed five wickets as the Edinburgh side lost their last five batsmen for 16 runs to leave a very reachable target.

Home skipper Jordan Davidson said, "We clawed our way back into the game by taking these last five wickets cheaply and threw it all away with some rash shots." Carlton II (20) 162, (R McPherson 40, C Humphries 5 for 23, A Sarif 3 for 22). Knights (8) 150, (N Service 32, B Wilkinson 30, T Clarke 4 for 18).

Knights' seconds found very difficult batting conditions at Haddington in their East League Division Four match.

The wet weather made the wicket very soft and in the early stages of the Dunfermline innings runs were at a premium.

Indeed at 16 for 5 they looked in a hapless position but a partnership of 36 between Scott Lucas and Thomas took the total past 50.

The tail also struggled and a total of 59 was never going to be enough although batting was at no stage easy.

Knights II (1) 59, (L Thomas 17, S Lucas 16, A Kumar 3 for 4, R Hiley 3 for 12). Haddington (20) 62 for 2, (R Hiley 21).

Broomhall first XI suffered their fourth defeat in a row in a low-scoring match against Kirk Brae in East League Division 3.

Denied a few senior players through injury, Broomhall struggled to 80 all out in 45 overs having been put in to bat with only Gary Seath and Charlie Stoddart reaching double figures. Dodd, with four wickets for 23, and Saleem, with three for 13 were the pick of the bowlers. Broomhall's reply started well with both openers dismissed cheaply but 34 from Sangster provided the base required for Kirk Brae to reach their target of 81 for the loss of six wickets, Chris Hoefling, Drew Smith and Ieuan Ward all picked up two wickets each. Broomhall will need to find form quickly if they are not to be drawn into a relegation battle but face a tricky encounter next week away to top side Gala.

Broomhall second XI were away to top-of-the-table Glenrothes. Put in to bat, they performed resiliently to reach a total of 137 for nine which included an excellent 63 from Lewis James. The early dismissal of opener Sim gave Broomhall hope but Glenrothes went on to show exactly why they remain unbeaten this season with 31 from Morrison, 36 from Glen and an excellent 61 from Tabasum seeing Glenrothes reach the target for the loss of only two wickets.
