A TEAM made up of West Fife under-18 cricketers has won the inaugural Fife T20 League.

Dunfermline man Gary Wilkinson put together the Fife Squires side after Freuchie’s withdrawal had left a gap in the league.

Wilkinson has been involved in local youth cricket for many years and his son, Ben, was part of the Squires team who needed to win their last match against Broomhall to take the title.

They romped home by 84 runs and the team was Ben Wilkinson and Scott Lucas, who play for Heriot’s, in Edinburgh, along with Jamie and Andrew Penman; Ieun Ward and Thomas Lucas, of Broomhall; Jamie and Peter Pryce, from Dalgety Bay; and Scott Fleming, from Largo.

Said Gary, “Entering the competition late after the withdrawal of Freuchie, the Squires took on the best of the Fife clubs in a series of matches that proved exciting for both the cricketers and spectators alike.

“After losing their first two games the youngsters quickly adapted their play and finished with six straight wins to take the title.” Eddie Gibbs, chief executive of FifeT20 sponsors LiveSport.co.uk, said, “The inaugural FifeT20 has benefited from one of the driest summers in recent times and a full run of fixtures always ensures that the best team wins the league. There is no doubt that Gary Wilkinson and his young Fife Squires team have thoroughly deserved to come out on top.

“It’s a credit to all the parents and the players that they’ve been crowned as the first FifeT20 champions. They joined the league late and had to play catch-up following the withdrawal of Freuchie; and have played some fantastic cricket under pressure.

“Hopefully next year other Fife clubs will come on board and perhaps in 2014 we’ll conclude things with a prestigious T20 finals day played out between the top four teams.” l The successful Fife Squires team is pictured, back row from left: Peter Pryce, Scott Fleming, Jamie Penman, Thomas Lucas, and Ieuan Ward (captain).
