Kelty boss says players have let club down
Rosyth (stripes) ended their season on a high with a 5-1 hammering of bottom-of-the-table Luncarty.
KELTY boss Stevie Leighton is rueing his first season without silverware - saying his team have let the club down in cup competitions.
Hearts have suffered defeats in various cup competitions this season at the hands of lower division Oakley and Kirkcaldy.
And Tuesday night saw them crash out of the Three 50s Cup with a 3-1 home defeat to Forfar West End.
Now, with one league game remaining, he admitted to Press Sport they "just want the season to finish".
He said, "The boys haven't done too well in the last part of the season - they've let the club down and have been really poor in the cups.
"We'll be getting some new blood in and look forward to pre-season. But now we just want the season to finish.
"There's always room for improvement and the main aim is always to stay in the Super League - that's been a success.
"It's up to us to get it right as a management team."
Leighton is looking to sign five new players for next season to add depth to his squad and will also welcome Gordon Forrest, formerly of East Fife, to the coaching team.
Reflecting further on the season, he added, "We've had more flair about us but not enough work-ethic players.
"To win cups you've got to be prepared to roll up your sleeves.
"It's the first season since I've been manager here that we've not had any silverware.
"We won three cups in our first three years. It's peaks and troughs."
Meanwhile, Oakley suffered their first defeat to Super League opposition in the regulation 90 minutes this season with a 4-1 East of Scotland Cup semi-final defeat at Musselburgh.
The score was 2-1 until the last 10 minutes when manager Stevie Kay admitted he "had to go for the win" - a decision that saw Musselburgh score two goals on the break.
It was a cruel end to a season that saw them finish just three points adrift of eventual East Central Bukta Teamwear.com league winners Thornton.
However, it capped a remarkable turnaround since he became manager, when the club were adrift at the bottom of the league having lost eight out of eight league matches.
He said, "We've come miles because Oakley were in total freefall when we went there.
"We've done remarkably well but by the same token it's not been enough."
Asked about the highlights of the season he said, "The way we played - keeping the ball on the deck.
"Technically we're a good football side, we've come a long way and have matured as a side but we let ourselves down in a few games and that cost us the league."
Rosyth finished their troubled season with a 5-1 away victory over bottom of the table Luncarty on Saturday.
Their goals came from Mark Ramsey, Ondrej Koc, Mike Brown with Stuart Ritchie bagging a brace.
Steelend Vics bounced back from Saturday's 4-0 hammering to Jeanfield Swifts by banging six past Newburgh in their 6-2 home win on Tuesday and rounded off their season with a trip to Scone Thistle last night (Wednesday).
