FOODBANKS in the Dunfermline area netted a winner on Sunday as Fife Soccer 7s donated more than a ton of food during their summer festival.

Organisers asked every player taking part in the event at Pitreavie to donate two tins or two packets of food to help vulnerable people in the Kingdom and they responded with what chairman Andi Campbell called an “amazing effort”.

More than 1000 children and 130 teams took part in the annual event and Campbell said, “The festival itself was tremendous.

“All the teams got four or five games each, the weather held up and everyone enjoyed it. We normally donate to kids’ charities but three or four months ago I thought that more foodbanks are propping up, and it went from there. It’s an educational thing as well as we’ve been explaining to them what they’re for but I couldn’t believe the amount we collected. It was tremendous.” As well as the Soccer 7s festival, the girls ‘fun fours’ football made its debut on Saturday as it began a trial period that will last until October.

Campbell said, “We have been working with David Noble (Bayside girls’ under-nines’ coach) in trying to get a league established but trying to get commitment from girls on a regular basis is different from boys. It is definitely picking up and teams from Dundee and Hearts were there, so hopefully it will get bigger. Long may it continue.”
