INVERKEITHING High School retained the Champion School trophy at the Fife Schools Swimming Gala held at Glenrothes on Tuesday, finishing more than 130 points ahead of closest rivals Bell Baxter.

The Inverkeithing swimmers won 11 of the 24 finals.

This included a clean sweep of all four finals at the girls" 12-13 level, Rachael O"Donnell won the breaststroke and freestyle events, while Chelsea Lawson won the backstroke and Samantha MacMillan won the butterfly.

In addition, Lewis Kirby won the boys" 12-13 title in the backstroke final.

No fewer than three Inverkeithing swimmers became double champions.

Apart from O"Donnell, Calum Shaw took the backstroke and freestyle titles at the boys" 16+ level, and Eloise Barber won the girls" 16+ titles at butterfly and freestyle.

In the butterfly final she broke a Fife schools record that had stood for a quarter of a century and this, along with her overall excellence, won her the prize for the best individual performance at the meet.

Inverkeithing"s other gold medallists on the day were Mairi Morrison (girls" 16+ backstroke) and Alistair Davis (boys" 14-15 butterfly).

In addition, Inverkeithing swimmers gained three second places and seven third places at the meet, returning to West Fife with a healthy total of 21 medals.

This stands the school in good stead for both the Scottish national individual championships, to be held in January, and the national relay championships, to be held in June.

In this latter event the girls of Inverkeithing High School will be defending the relays title that they have won for the past four years in succession.
