DUNFERMLINE clinched second place in League One despite being held to a scoreless draw by Forfar Athletic this afternoon.

In a scrappy game played in blustery conditions, both teams had chances to score - Andy Geggan saw a header cleared off the line while Omar Kader struck the bar for the Loons - but the Pars will be relieved to have confirmed home advantage for the second leg of their play-off semi-final.

Jim Jefferies rang the changes from last week's loss to Airdrieonians with the play-offs in mind. Lewis Martin, Alex Whittle, Ryan Williamson, Allan Smith and Ryan Thomson were all restored to the starting line-up and the home side began on the front foot.

Andy Geggan flashed two early efforts wide of target and although they enjoyed the lions' share of possession, a swirling wind made conditions difficult for both teams.

Thomson was unfortunate not to head a deflected Whittle effort on target on 13 minutes before Lewis Martin flashed a header wide from Danny Grainger's corner.

Smith was next to have a go as his shot into the ground at the far post, having been picked out by Grainger's long throw, hit the side net before Gavin Swankie sent a speculative effort from range over for the Loons.

Good play between Whittle and Smith saw the ball set up for Falkingham but his driving effort was deflected wide after 26 minutes.

Forfar had appeals for a penalty nine minutes from the break as Dale Hilson went down under a Grainger challenge but referee Greg Aitken was unmoved.

Dunfermline thought they'd opened the scoring three minutes later as Geggan headed Falkingham's corner towards goal but the visitors cleared off the line.

They started the second half on the offensive with Williamson shooting wide at the near post from Whittle's deep cross before Dale Hilson broke down the left and, after evading Falkingham and Martin, he fluffed his shot wide of the near post.

On 57 minutes Forfar missed a golden chance to take the lead. Hilson again caused problems, standing up a lovely cross for Kader who somehow headed over from six yards.

They went even closer minutes later when Kader struck the bar with a header before the ball was deflected to safety for a corner as the nerves of the Pars fans started to fray.

Williamson had another chance on 64 minutes as Whittle again picked him out at the far post but this time he sent his driving effort across goal and wide.

Geggan saw another effort blocked before Thomson was unfortunate not to get his head to Whittle's delivery six yards from goal.

Hilson then flicked a cross ball on for Jamie McCluskey but he could only divert the ball straight at Scully from six yards before substitute Ross Forbes sent a curling free-kick from distance onto the roof of the net.

The visitors howled for a penalty in the dying minutes as Ross Campbell went down under Scully's challenge, but the contest ended goalless and Dunfermline now face a wait to find out their opponents in the play-offs.
