Kelty Hearts 3 Bonnyrigg Rose 1 Thomas Courts believes his Kelty Hearts side can challenge at the top of the table if he can add “two or three golden nuggets” to his squad.

Kelty beat Bonnyrigg Rose comfortably on Saturday, ending the Midlothian team’s long unbeaten run away from home in the process.

Craig O’Reilly, who netted a double in Wednesday’s 4-0 rout of Armadale, opened the scoring after only two minutes before Rose equalised against the run of play through Alex King.

Kelty, however, were not to be denied and Stuart Cargill’s second-half double sealed a fine three points that kept the hosts proudly at the summit.

Courts told Press Sport, “We’ve got a good team spirit about us and although we know we won’t get it all our own way throughout the season, we’re savouring the victories considering how last season went. It is a good start and we want to put a run together so the challenge for us is to keep it going over the next six or seven games. We’re still looking to strengthen and I think that there are two or three golden nuggets out there who can take us from being a good, solid side to one that tries to challenge higher in the table.

“The games couldn’t have gone any better and it’s really pleasing. We’re now more resilient and our strikers are scoring goals, so overall I think we have a bit more of a rounded squad. We now have a few match-winners in the squad and fingers crossed we can keep this momentum going.” Edinburgh United 4 Oakley United 0 Oakley United’s difficult start to the season continued on Saturday as they were heavily beaten by newly-promoted Edinburgh United.

New boss James Watt lost a number of last season’s squad in the summer, including striker Charlie Scarborough, who bagged a goal in new club Glenrothes’ 3-2 victory at Blairwood Park on Wednesday night. Despite the defeat, with Oakley’s goals coming from Alan Paton and Joseph Miller, they had produced an encouraging performance but they had no answer to the capital side as they dropped to the foot of the table.

The West Fifers fell behind on 27 minutes and were 2-0 down at the break after Hunter netted the hosts’ second. It went from bad to worse in the second half, as two goals in two minutes late on completed a miserable afternoon.

Crossgates Primrose 2 Blackburn United 3 A five-goal thriller at Humbug Park provided little consolation for Crossgates as they ended up pointless despite an encouraging display against Blackburn United.

David McNeely’s men were looking to build on Wednesday’s opening 2-2 draw at Lochgelly Albert but got off to the worst possible start on Saturday as they fell two goals behind.

Trialist Alex Lurinski fired the West Lothian side ahead inside the opening 10 minutes before heading his second with only 15 minutes on the clock.

It gave Crossgates a mountain to climb but, undeterred by the challenge, they set about hauling themselves back into the contest. After failing to convert first-half chances, Donald Hyslop pulled a goal back after the break before Jamie Forrester netted a deserved leveller.

As the hosts pushed forward in search of a winner, they were undone by Lurinski once more as he latched on to a long ball to complete his hat-trick 11 minutes from time to snatch all three points for the West Lothian side.

Assistant boss Kevin McArthur said, “We had a few call-offs which didn’t help but unfortunately if you make errors you will be punished. It was a kick in the teeth as in the second half we were much better and played some attractive football.” Stoneyburn Juniors 0 Rosyth Rec 2 Rosyth boss Lee Richardson remains hopeful of adding to his squad after watching them make it two wins from two at Stoneyburn on Saturday.

On-loan Kelty Hearts marksman Jason Penman netted a double on his debut as Rec followed their opening 5-2 thrashing of Falkirk JFC with an away win that equals the number of successes they enjoyed on the road during the whole of last season.

Last Wednesday, four goals from Tam Hamson was added to by John McDermott as they kicked off the season in style and Rosyth sit joint-top of the South Division ahead of this week’s home clash with Whitburn.

And Richardson told Press Sport that he is looking to bring in a replacement for the outgoing John Ferguson, who will leave the club next month and move to Germany.

He said, “When you’re winning everyone wants to come and I’ve got this boy on my radar but he plays for Lochore at the minute, so we’ll wait and see. I’m ecstatic with how we’ve started and on Saturday we didn’t play great but last season we would’ve probably drew or lost that game. We ground out a result and I had to leave two guys out completely, which is a new experience for me after last season.

“Whitburn will be a tough game but there is a lot of confidence flowing through the team.” Saturday’s fixtures (kick-offs 2.30pm): McBookie.com Super League – Penicuik Athletic v Kelty Hearts.
