SKIPPER Andy Doyle was both a sinner and a saint for Dunfermline Carnegie on Saturday as the team recorded their first win in Scottish Men's Hockey League Division Two this season.

Following their heavy defeat last weekend against title favourites Grove Menzieshill, Carnegie went straight onto the attack against Greenock, last season's Division Three champions.

The home team enjoyed the lion's share of possession with Doyle looking lively but were unable to make the breakthrough before half-time.

Throughout the second period Carnegie looked the team most likely to score but a good performance by the visiting goalkeeper added to the home team's frustrations. Doyle then missed the chance to put Carnegie ahead when he failed to convert a penalty corner on 43 minutes.

By the midpoint of the half the superior fitness levels of the home team began to show and another penalty corner was squandered, although this time the keeper was beaten but the ball rebounded off his right-hand post to safety.

It was not the turn of Greenock to show their frustration resulting in a couple of verbal warnings and a yellow card five-minute penalty for rough and dangerous play.

At last the deadlock was broken on 65 minutes from another penalty corner, this time finished off by Doyle with a low flick, much to the relief of his team.

Carnegie manager Keith Forster told Press Sport, "There were plenty of chances throughout the game although our finishing was a little wayward but we got the goal eventually and in general defended well.

"With no game this week, due to the scheduled game against Glasgow University being postponed until 9th November, the team can work in training on the one or two weaker areas of their game before we travel to Stepps on 20th September were another good performance will be required."
