ABERDOUR'S first encounter with Taynuilt Shinty Club ended with a 3-1 defeat at Silver Sands on Saturday.
The result saw the Argyllshire team, which reformed this year after an 18-year absence from senior shinty, move to third place in South Division 2 with two games in hand over leaders Glenorchy.
Aberdour had the better of the early exchanges and took the lead in 15 minutes through Doug Newsom.
For the first half hour the home side was on top and would have extended their lead but for some good goalkeeping from Richard Duffy, who tipped a fierce drive from Newsom over the bar and blocked a shot from David Rogers with his legs.
Taynuilt gradually applied more pressure, forcing a series of corners but Aberdour mounted a solid defensive wall and looked to be going into the second half with their lead intact when William Gillies scored an equaliser in the 45th minute.
Aberdour brought on Angus Thorbur for Rogers at half-time and the youngster used his speed to good effect, floating some great crosses in from the left wing.
Andy Mathie, Newsom and Matt Bremner all drew saves from the Taynuilt keeper but hesitancy in snapping up rebounds cost them dear.
Taynuilt mounted a series of attacks but Aberdour's defensive trio of Tom Bowerman, Lisa Norman and Fraser Mathisen held them at bay.
However, the midfield were defending deeper and deeper as the match progressed.
Taynuilt's patience was rewarded with a second goal from Gillies on the hour.
Five minutes later, Stewart Harris shot across Aberdour keeper Mathisen and the ball went in off the far post making it 3-1 for the visitors.
Aberdour stepped up a gear to get back into the game, with Mathie and Katy Smith contesting every ball and Kevin McKell putting in another hard shift on the right wing.
Newsom tried to attack but was well marshalled and shepherded away from the danger areas while Amy MacDonald and Bremner got decent shots on target without reducing the deficit.
Aberdour's next match is on 5th July, when they take on Kyles Athletic at Silver Sands.
