DUNFERMLINE Carnegie defeated Division 4 rivals Kirk Brae in Edinburgh on Saturday by a convincing 62-run margin.

Stand-in skipper Matthew Lafferty lost the toss and Carnegie were put in to bat first.

Despite some tight line and length bowling from the hosts, Carnegie achieved a total of 164 for 6 off their allotted 50 overs.

Highlights of the Carnegie innings were 35 from Gary Steward and an unbeaten 36 not out from skipper Lafferty.

In searing heat, Carnegie set about defending their total but encountered aggressive stroke play from the Kirk Brae openers who raced to 33 without loss after 4 overs.

Steward struck twice with two caught and bowled efforts to dismiss the opening pair.

The first bowling change proved decisive as change bowlers Gavin Ross and Niall Walker both took three wickets each in very economical spells.

The top moment came from Ross" first ball, a speedy inswinging yorker that demolished the batsman"s middle stump. Kirk Brae fell to 102 all out. (Ross 3 for 9, Walker 3 for 15).

Lafferty was elated after the match, saying, 'It was a real team effort today. All of the batsmen chipped in and showed discipline to build good partnerships and leave wickets in hand for a run chase towards the end of our innings.

'I was pleased to have Gavin Ross back bowling, he has real pace and is an asset to the team. Our fielding also was first class, and we restricted Kirk Brae very well.'

This Saturday Carnegie entertain promotion hopefuls Musselburgh at Pitreavie with play starting at 1pm.
