WEST FIFE cycling duo Charline Joiner and Eileen Roe are on track for this summer's Commonwealth Games after overcoming injury and illness problems.

Charline (26) and best pal Eileen (25) have resumed full training as they bid to secure the qualifying times that will see them line-up for Scotland at the Sir Chris Hoy Veledrome in July.

Dunfermline-based Charline (pictured on left), who is looking to ride in the points and scratch races, returned to cycling on the road recently after spending six weeks confined to the gym and a static bike after suffering fractures to three vertebrae in her back following an accident in Spain in January.

After spending eight days in hospital and time recovering at home, a scan has revealed two of the vertebrae have completely healed, which the other is almost fully recovered.

She'll return to action action on her birthday later this month and is aiming for Glasgow and national success with High Valleyfield's Eileen. She said, "For the last three weeks I've been on the static so I've mostly been training on my own, so it hasn't been the most exciting.

"My first day back on the road was on Saturday and I felt strong. My coach is very impressed so I'm in a good position to go for qualifying over the next month.

"I think that I'm fitter than what I was before the accident but I'm not putting any more pressure on myself. All my hard work is towards meeting the qualifying times for the points and scratch but the board know what's happened in the past couple of months, and I've got lots of points from previous events.

"It would be a dream to be part of a medal-winning team, especially if it was with my best pal!

"She has been there for me through my injury and I'd love us both to be there. I have my heart set on it." Eileen (pictured on right), who is also aiming to be involved in the points and scratch events and the road race, has just returned to full fitness after three chest infections since the turn of the year.

She said, "Charline has recovered so well and I'm proud of her. It's been a nightmare for me and I've only just come back into full training but hopefully that'll be it until Glasgow.

"Charline is my best friend and it would be a dream to race with each other, make Scotland proud and bring a medal back to Dunfermline." Selection for the Scottish cycling team is scheduled to be made by the end of May, with track events taking place from 24th-27th July and time trial and road courses held on 31st July and 3rd August.
