THE road cycling season has continued with the Scottish National 50-mile time trial championship, held at Irvine on Sunday.

Sandy Wallace Cycles (SWC) rider Silas Goldsworthy rode a superlative race, winning the championship in 1 hour, 43 minutes and 48 seconds, an incredible average speed of 28.9mph! The time was only 44 seconds outside the record held by Graham Obree which was achieved on a faster course. Alan Thomson (SWC) finished in second place, recording another superb PB of 1:47.09, more than three minutes ahead of the third-place rider.

With such a head start, Sandy Wallace Cycles won the team gold medals with the backing of veteran Steve Beech, who recorded 2:02.25. Beech, aged 64, and only riding his fifth event of the year after a crash sidelined him for more than two months, is now rapidly returning to good form.

Final events in the British Masters Track Championships saw Gwyneth Rixon, of Sandy Wallace Cycles, pick up second places in the sprint and the 500-metre TT, rounded off by fourth place in the pursuit in the women's 50-year plus category. In each event she was beaten by Brenda Tate, a former world champion and GB international rider.
