THE excitement of the Commonwealth Games may be over but the biggest sporting extravaganza in West Fife is ready to kick off in style this week.

Hosted by Dunfermline and West Fife Sports Council, in partnership with Fife Council, Carnegie Dunfermline Trust and Fife Sports and Leisure Trust, the annual Sport For All Festival will provide 10 days of national and local displays, tournaments and come-and-try events for those still on a high from Glasgow to enjoy across a wide variety of sports.

From those who dream of emulating Pitreavie AAC’s Commonwealth silver medalist Eilidh Child, to those happy to take a back seat and watch a track day at Knockhill, there’s something for everyone to enjoy with 16 sports on offer to either try or spectate.

The Festival begins on Friday at Aberdour Shinty Club, who will welcome P1-P3 kids from 5.15-6pm, and P4-P7 from 6-7.15pm, to try out one of West Fife’s fastest growing sports for free.

On Saturday, budding martial artists will have their chance to try out one of Scotland’s most successful sports at Glasgow 2014 with Destination Judo at the Scout Hall in Leys Park Road. Dunfermline City Hockey Club will welcome teams from across the country to contest the Kevin Walker Community Hockey Shield at Woodmill High School, while golfers can get into swing of things with a come-and-try session from 5-7pm at Pitreavie Golf Club.

The following day, motorsport fans can enjoy a French car-themed show and Hot Hatch Car Trackday at Knockhill from 9am, while Shiresmill Therapy Riding Centre, by Blairhall, are offering a free fun day with pony rides, falconry and gymnastic displays.

Dunfermline Tennis Club opens its doors to host a come-and-try open day from 3.45-8pm on Wednesday 3rd September, which will also see taster sessions in fencing, orienteering, swimming and football take place.

The Forth Bridges provide a spectacular backdrop for one of the stand-out swimming events of the festival on Saturday 6th September, as 26 competitors brave the River Forth Swim. The annual open water 1.4 mile event, hosted by the Scottish Swimming Association, begins at noon with the first swimmer expected to arrive at North Queensferry’s Old Pier at 12.30pm.

The same day will also see a scrum of activity at McKane Park, where Dunfermline Rugby Club host their ‘Festival of Rugby’. Running from 11am-4pm, this free event provides an introduction to the sport for those keen to learn new skills, while specialist classes tailored to individual positions on the field are available to more experienced players.

The festival concludes on Sunday 7th September, and an action-packed final day includes the Ernie Letley under-12’s seven-a-side football tournament at Rosyth Civil Service Club, the 31st Annual Sport For All Bowls Championship at Townhill Bowling Club and the national 23rd Young Athletes Trophy Meeting at Pitreavie Athletics Stadium.

Noel Grimshaw, secretary of Dunfermline and West Fife Sports Council, said, “The Sports Council and its partners are delighted with the enthusiasm and commitment demonstrated by local sports organisations in staging such an attractive selection of events for this year’s festival.

“Thanks are extended to member clubs, Fife Sports and Leisure Trust, Fife Council and leisure facilities staff for providing not only the local community but also competitors, officials, spectators and visitors with such a stimulating collection of leisure-time pursuits for this year’s festival.” Full event details can be found in the festival programme, which is available from schools, libraries, community and leisure centres and other public outlets.
