WEST FIFE cyclists put their pedal to the mettle last week as they competed in the Fife Hill Climb Championships last Wednesday.

Riders from both Sandy Wallace Cycles and Dunfermline Cycling Club took part in the Cleish Hill Climb, the 20th event in the Fife Cycling Association's Midweek Time Trial Series calendar that incorporates the Fife Hill Climb Championships and saw strong performances from participating West Fifers.

Although times were down over the three-kilometre course from last year's event due to cold and damp conditions, Sandy Wallace's Tom Arnstein claimed the title in a time of 6:11, while Stuart Turvey made it a double success for Sandy Wallace Cycles by claiming the youth title in 7:49.

Dunfermline Cycling Club had 10 riders competing in the event, with Steve Nicholson and Ryan Bunyan recording times inside seven minutes.

Sandy Wallace Cycles' John Woodrow came in eighth with a time of 6 minutes and 39 seconds.

Meanwhile, Silas Goldsworthy, of Sandy Wallace Cycles, has been tuning up his form for the forthcoming British National 10-mile TT Championship. In a mid-week event in Newcastle, he recorded a 20:01 with a 38-second winning margin over the second-placed rider.

Goldsworthy won the Marymass 10 at Eglington, near Irvine, with a rapid 19:47, with the club's Alan Thomson in second place with 20:27. Alan Mill recorded 55:01 in the Sam Dooley Memorial 25-mile TT, taking fourth place in the event held on the West Ferry-Port Glasgow course.
