AN ABERDOUR teenager is the youngest ever competitor to be selected for the Commonwealth Fencing Championships.

Jessica Corby (16) will fence for Scotland in the women's sabre team when the international event starts in Largs in November.

The 30 most skilled fencers from across the country, including Dunfermline's Jamie Fitzgerald (23) in the men's foil, have been chosen and could face teams from Australia, Canada, India, Singapore, Northern Ireland and England.

Jamaica, Malaysia and Barbados are among the other countries taking part in the six day international event at the Sportscotland Inverclyde National Centre.

Jessica, of Inverkeithing High School, said, "I am so excited to be picked for the team. I've been fencing since I was eight-years-old and to represent Scotland has always been my dream.

"I knew there was a chance I would be picked for the Commonwealth Games but since I'm only 16 I thought I would have to wait until 2018.

"To have made it this time round feels fantastic and I can't wait to make my family, and hopefully Scotland, proud."

Jessica is the youngest in the women's sabre team - the oldest is 41 - and the youngest ever to be selected for a Scottish Commonwealth fencing team.

Event director Chris Hyde said, "Scotland is a hot-bed of fencing talent and I am thrilled with our team who are passionate about both the sport and performing very well at this very high level."

Tickets for the event, from 10th to 15th November, are on sale at www.cfc2014.org.
