A DUNFERMLINE golfer displayed a Dutch of class as he received the Alfred Dunhill Schools Challenge trophy from a football icon.

Dunfermline High School pupil Kyle Perkins won the senior boys’ title in the competition staged last month over the Kittocks Course at The Fairmont, St Andrews, and was presented with his prize by former AC Milan, Chelsea and Netherlands star Ruud Gullit.

The annual event sees young golfers represent schools across Fife, Dundee and Angus and Perkins defeated Inverkeithing High School’s Hamish Gorn in a closely-fought contest.

After both carded a net score of 74, Perkins won on a count back and received his trophy at the Old Course on Sunday during the final day of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, to which all participants were invited. They were also invited, together with their parents and a school representative, to attend an exclusive golf clinic on the Championship practice ground given by the internationally renowned golf coach Robert Baker.

Gullit, who took part in this year’s pro-am event, said, “The most important thing is to enjoy what you do but you must also remember that having a talent is not enough. You need to work for it. It’s like a rough diamond which you need to mould and get into the right shape.

“If you really want it you need to ask how much are you prepared to put in the practice and dedication to get it.”
