Dunfermline City 3 Stirling University 1 Dunfermline City climbed off the bottom of the table with a hard fought win over Stirling University on Saturday.

The Fifers started the season with three straight defeats and faced the winless students at Woodmill High School with Adam Rintoul, Jamie Whitsed and Ross Smith all returning to the team.

Aged just 14, Cairney Martin made a fine home debut and City made a whirlwind start with two goals in four minutes.

At a short corner, Neil Fleming found Rintoul and his shot deflected off a Stirling stick and into the roof of the net.

Gareth Edwards then picked out David Miller’s run and the striker’s finish couldn’t be stopped.

Ross Smith was denied a goal against his old team when a Stirling defender cleared off the line and tempers frayed just before half-time.

Calm heads prevailed and City quickly netted when Rintoul fed Miller and he beat three men and rounded the keeper to score.

The university got a deserved goal from a short corner but Dunfermline kept on top to secure a vital win.

This weekend they face Watsonians in Edinburgh.

Former president Mike McInally was back in the side after long term injury and they went ahead against Stirling Wanderers 2s when Alan Green netted.

Athol Murray kept them in front with some fine stops before new boy James Luff scored his first goal for the club with a tap-in.

Wanderers replied but Green restored the two goal cushion and completed his hat-trick shortly after.

Stirling scored again after Murray conceded a penalty flick but City secured the win and face Falkirk 4s at Woodmill this weekend.
