THERE are fears that Kingseat could lose its bowls club.

Kingseat Bowling Club, on Church Street, has been one of the social hubs of the former mining village for many decades but over the past few years the membership has dwindled.

Local councillor, Alex Campbell (pictured), said that unless people rally around the facility, it could be lost and he and Provost Jim Leishman will be out and about in Kingseat on Saturday morning urging people to consider getting involved in any way they can to save it.

“This really would be a serious loss to Kingseat if it was to shut,” said the Lochs member of Fife Council.

“It is not so many years ago that Kingseat Bowling Club was a vibrant place all year round but even in the summer season it is no longer as busy as it once was.

“The playing numbers have dropped to 12 and the management committee’s average age is growing steadily so we need people in the village to come aboard and help turn things around.” Councillor Campbell and Provost Leishman will be knocking on doors to raise awareness of the bowling club and a public meeting is to be held at the club at 7pm on Wednesday.

“The bowling club not only provides a lovely playing surface for a sport which caught the public imagination during the summer’s Commonwealth Games, its well-appointed clubhouse is a fine social facility which can be used for all sorts of activities,” Cllr Campbell continued.

“We need people to join as playing members as well as social members and it would be good to see youngsters learning to play the game on the green.

“There have been a lot of new homes built in Kingseat in recent years and it is possible that residents there might not even know that the village has a bowling club.

“The social aspect of the club is very important. It has a nice function area which holds 50 people comfortably and is ideal for family parties, so it has a real role to play in Kingseat life.”
