STUDENTS at NP Tae Kwon Do Academy in Dunfermline kicked up a storm to win 16 gold medals at the UTF Scotland Scottish Championships recently.

The Walmer Drive based club, headed by fifth degree chief instructor Nik Purves, enjoyed a hugely successful day at Grangemouth Sports Complex on 7th February as four of their students – Amy McNair (9), Cameron Taylor (9), Georgie Watters (12) and Katy Haslam (7) – were double gold medalists, while they also claimed 16 silver and 15 bronze.

Their medal haul exceeded their tally from last year’s event, with gold medals also claimed by Erin McNair (adult), Mya Watters (13), Jake Nelson (9), James Syme (9), Finn Brady (6), Anna Duffield (12), Rachel McIntyre (12) and junior black belt Lewis Hill (13).

Attention will now focus to this year’s World Championships in Rimini, Italy, in June and third degree instructor Louise Purves said, “They all did really well and I think we had less people taking part than we did last year. We had students as young as five competing for the club and I think that our medal tally will be a wee bit higher, which we’ll only find out when our classes go back.

“To win 16 Scottish titles is fantastic, especially as they all had to go through quite a few rounds. From what we were seeing, people were having to go through four or five rounds to win a gold medal so they worked very hard and really earned it. Nik’s really happy with the way the kids have performed and as a club we’re over the moon.

“We’ll be turning our focus now to Rimini, although we won’t have a list of who’s going until Easter time. But for whoever goes, it’ll be a big experience for them.”
