The Queen Anne team made it 20 victories in the last 23 years with five good victories against the best teams in Fife.

The 12-team tournament was split into four qualifying groups before the final sectional groups were decided. Queen Anne qualified for the championship group with wins against Glenrothes (32-7) and Lochgelly (26-2).

In the championship section, Queen Anne defeated Buckhaven 40-9 and Madras 41-2, setting up a final decider against undefeated Waid Academy.

Queen Anne kept their form and were never behind to take the trophy with a 24-8 victory.

The following week, the same team were in the semi-final of the Scottish Cup for the third time in four years. The boys were hoping to make it third time lucky against a strong Gryffe HS team from East Renfrewshire.

The game started at a frantic pace with both teams working to establish an early lead but at the end of the first quarter there was little in it with Gryffe narrowly in front 15-14.

The second quarter was just as tight, although Gryffe started to score from the outside with six three-point shots to lead 30-26 at the half-way stage.

Queen Anne rallied in the third quarter and had the momentum but could not capitalise on their chances to take the lead. Gryffe’s good outside shooting continued and foul trouble for QAHS saw Gryffe HS stretch their lead at the end of the third to 52-44.

A change of defence by Gryffe HS at the start of the fourth quarter upset Queen Anne’s rhythm and their scoring rate slowed as a result. Good offensive rebounding by Gryffe HS robbed Queen Anne of valuable possession and with time running out, they started to rush their shots to try to get back in the game.

At the buzzer Gryffe HS ran out deserved winners 70-53 in what was a game worthy of the final.
