DUNFERMLINE'S two flag American football teams will collide for the first time in the opening weekend of the league season.

Carnegie Steelers and Dunfermline Revolution go head-to-head in the British American Football Association’s National Flag Football League at Pitreavie on Sunday.

The Steelers made their bow in the league last year but have undergone a squad reshuffle as a large number of their players left the club to join the newly formed Revolution outfit.

The teams will compete in the Highland North Conference of the non-contact 5v5 version of the game, and as well as the eagerly anticipated derby clash, the Steelers will take on the Glasgow Hornets and Dunbeth Dragons, while Revolution face up to Dunbeth.

Steelers’ Steven Burness said, “It’s a big game to open up with against the Revolution but we’ve had a good pre-season, winning four games and losing two. In the last game we played a young, fit Strathclyde University team and beat them in the last 16 seconds so we’re happy with how things have gone. Ideally we’d like to make the end of season play-offs but it’s going to be a very hard division.” David McColgan, Revolution team manager, said, “We’ve put a good squad together and the positive for us is that all of the guys bar two played together last year so they know how each other are going to play.

“Our guys will be looking to pick up from where they left off last season and they have the self-belief that they can compete against the better teams in the division.

“We’re itching to get the season going and there is an extra story with it being Carnegie on the opening weekend.

“But for us it’s just another game and, regardless of the result, we’ll shake hands as they’re forging ahead themselves while we’ve got our own club to focus on.” The action kicks off at 11am.
