After shining in the Future Stars Boys category of the Revolution Series in the earlier part of the year, Nally has been an almost ever present on the top step of the podium.

The 15-year-old Woodmill High School pupil kicked things off with victory in the under-16 boys category of the ERC Youth Season Starter Race before following that up with first-place finishes in the Johnstone Jets Bella Crit and Crit on the Campus events.

All of this has given Nally the confidence that he can give himself the best possible early birthday present as he sets his sights on the British Cycling National Youth Circuit Championship on 12th July – that day before he turns 16 years old.

“The main aim for this year is to get a podium position at the British Championships for Road on 12th July. It’s actually the day before by birthday so it could either be a good day or bad,” said Nally.

“I came fifth last year so it’s definitely within reach. Last year was my first proper year doing British races and I was new to it so I'm confident I can build on the experience and hopefully go one better.

“I’m looking to do well in the Youth Tour and secure a stage win. The competition is high and it really challenges you but I’m confident I can do well,” he said.

“I’m also on the Olympic Development Programme and I’d like to carry on with that. It’s tough and the training is hard but it’s definitely worth it.” Nally’s fine form hasn’t gone unnoticed as he was named as one of 100 athletes chosen as part of the SSE Next Generation programme.

The programme – for athletes aged 13 to 25 – identifies potential Commonwealth Games and Olympic medallists of the future, providing them with financial help and mentoring from elite athletes like Olympic medal-winning diver Leon Taylor, former sprinter Darren Campbell and Judy Murray.

“It’s pretty amazing to be accepted onto this scheme, I was not expecting it and it’s exciting, hopefully it can give me an edge on other competitors,” he added.

“To meet the likes of Judy Murray and Darren Campbell is inspiring and it’s great to be on the scheme, I’ve been able to meet a lot of new people already and it is really inspiring.” SSE’s Next Generation programme partners with SportsAid to provide financial support and training to the sports stars of the future.
