Fourteen-year-old Forrest’s success was all the more remarkable as she was fighting in the under-52 kilo category of the Pre-Cadet under-15s girls’ age band for the first time.

The Dunfermline High School pupil made light of the challenge with victory over Sweden’s Agnes Erikssen after a first round bye, throwing her opponent for ippon with a superb harai goshi technique (pictured right).

Northern Ireland’s Daina Cardwell proved a tougher opponent in the semi-final, but the Fifer dominated the grips and an osoto gari throw for wazari saw the contest decided in her favour.

The final, against England’s Libby Arkless was even closer, but Forrest managed the only scoring throw in the three minute contest, a tani otoshi which was awarded yuko, enabling her to be crowned Sportif International champion for the second consecutive year.

Joining her on the top step of the podium was Dalgety Bay’s Marsh, who celebrated his 11th birthday in style with victory in the A Band boys under-27kg class, his third tournament success of 2015.

The Donibristle Primary pupil followed up an earlier yuko victory with a deft counter-attacking throw for wazari in a close final contest against Elgin JC’s Reece Edwards to guarantee another gold medal.

Other local medallists were Benjamin Kennedy, who took silver in the A Band Boys’ under-50kg category, whilst Carnegie Judo Club team-mate Jamie Horn continued his good form with ippon wins over Sweden’s Sam Parker and England’s Jamie Horn en route to a second successive silver medal in the A Band Boys’ under-42kg weight band. Carnegie’s Shaun Labonte was awarded bronze in the Junior men’s under-21 under-100kg class.

Destination JC’s Ryan Turnbull lost out in a very competitive Cadet under-18 Boys’ under-66kg category, whilst clubmate Kirsty Marsh faced British champion Aimee Grant in the repechage final in the Cadet Girls’ under-52kg class.

She took her the full four minute distance for the first time but Grant’s superior experience eventually told and she took the bronze medal with a uchi mata throw for wazari.
