COMMONWEALTH GAMES stars Charline Joiner and Eileen Roe stole the show during an action-packed evening of closed road cycling in Dunfermline last night (Thursday).

More than 80 riders took to the start line in Pittencrieff Park for the second running of the timed race, where competitors pedalled for 40 minutes around a city centre route including the Abbey and Maygate before finishing with an additional three laps.

The event, delivered by Active Fife and Filles A Velo and Dunfermline Cycling Clubs, attracted cyclists from clubs across the country to compete in youth, women's and men's races but it was star West Fife names who hogged the headlines.

Joiner, fresh from securing a first Matrix Fitness GP series win in Croydon on Tuesday, quickly pulled clear of the rest of the field in the women's race alongside High Valleyfield's British National Circuit Race champion Roe.

An enthralling battle between the two elite riders commenced all the way to a sprint finish and it was Joiner who took the honours, edging out her close friend by just 00.300 seconds in a total time of 51:11.800. Team Thomsons Cycles' Erika Allen was third.

Prior to the women's event, the youth race saw Charlestown's Joe Nally dominate proceedings as he crossed the line in first place in a time of 36:53.000, more than four minutes clear of second placed Alex MacRae (41:02.800) and third placed Andrew Merry (41:03.800).

The men's race wrapped up proceedings and was won by Steve Lawley in 52:38.300, with Fraser Martin (55:41.500) second and Peter Murdoch (55:41.900) third.

We will have more reaction to last night's race in next Thursday's Dunfermline Press.
