DUNFERMLINE Rugby Club went into the Christmas break on the back of a good victory against Ellon on Saturday with the bonus that their closest rivals had suffered a surprise defeat.

The victory gives the McKane Park side a bit of breathing space between them and the chasing pack.

Despite three weeks without a game the Dunfermline pack started with a bang, Tommy McColl collecting the home kick off to gallop deep into the Ellon half where pressure was applied to the point where Ellon gave away a penalty.

From the resultant line out, more good possession saw Graham Low nip over untouched for the first score inside two minutes.

Only some last-ditch defending kept the home side at bay in the opening 20 minutes.

Dunfermline indiscipline then put Ellon in the lead but the home pack upped their efforts in the closing stages of the first half and dominated possession and the set piece to score two great forward tries.

The first was scored by try machine Rob Hamilton and the second came from Jocky Carr. Ali O"Connor also added a penalty before half time.

The second half ended in disappointment as the home side were only able to add a penalty to the score board which meant the victory was missing the bonus point fourth try.

There is a break now until 10th January when the Premiership teams enter the National Cup. Dunfermline travel to Allan Glens for their opening fixture and the following week, travel 13 miles for the important local derby at Kirkcaldy.

I note the big fella with the headgear and lifting tape on in the photo. Looks like Gene Simmis to me, just wondering how he was performing ? Any readers out there who can fill me in ...
