YOUNGSTERS from Aberdour Shinty Club earned the title of best team in the south of Scotland on Sunday.
At the Cowal Highland Gathering Shinty Festival, the club"s under-17s were south champions in the south under-17 competition.
And in a great weekend for the club, Aberdour under-12s won the Milngavie sixes, smashing an excellent Oban side 5-0 in the final while the club"s under-10s reached the semi-finals.
To round things off, Aberdour head coach Lisa Norman won the Women"s Scotland Cup with Glasgow Mid Argyll women, beating Glenorchy in the final, while Aberdour"s Tom Bowerman played in goal for Glasgow Mid Argyll men, who finished runners-up in the tournament. Bowerman, who had figured in the under-17s" success, was unlucky not to earn a second winners" medal after saving a goal in the penalty decider.
Aberdour were the only club in the south of Scotland to field two teams in the south under-17 competition.
The A team drew their opening game 0-0 with Glenorchy but went on to top the league stage by winning all their remaining games.
The final saw them meet Glenorchy again and Douglas Newsom scored after just 30 seconds to give them an early lead.
Some great keeping from Glenorchy kept Aberdour from scoring several more times in the first half but they made it 2-0 in the second when Ross Nicol"s volley came back off the crossbar to Calum Shaw, who laid it off to Newsome for a fantastic second.
Glenorchy pulled one back but Aberdour held on to lift the Cowal Highland Gathering Shinty Challenge Cup.
Aberdour"s under-12s won the Milngavie annual invitational shinty tournament without conceding a goal, saving their finest display until last to hammer Rockfield (Oban) 5-0 in the final.
The under-10s also came away from Milngavie with medals after qualifying for the semi-finals, where they were beaten 3-0 by St Columba (Oban).
