ABERDOUR Shinty Club entertained South Division Two leaders Glenorchy at Silversands on Saturday.

Glenorchy arrived with a 100 per cent record this season and had yet to concede a goal but this did not discourage the Fife side from going on the attack.

Within 10 minutes Aberdour had taken the lead, Doug Newsom putting the ball at Joe Dunton"s feet and the club"s leading scorer did the rest, giving Glenorchy keeper Andy Smith no chance from 20 yards.

Glenorchy were stung into action and pressed forward for an equaliser, creating two reasonable chances before Andy MacLean gathered the ball just outside Aberdour"s penalty area and drove it into the net.

Aberdour were contesting every ball and Glenorchy were pegged back in their own half for long periods. Just after the half hour mark, Aberdour centre Calum Shaw won the ball in midfield and his long flighted pass found Newsom 20 yards out, back to goal, who turned and fired the ball home.

The home side were unlucky not to add to their score, with two shots going just wide, but the score remained 2-1 at half-time.

They were left regretting missed opportunities after the interval. With the wind and slope now in Glenorchy"s favour, the Argyll side levelled through Keith MacRae after 50 minutes and Glenorchy began to gain more and more possession.

Aberdour"s defence held out for a further 25 minutes but with 15 minutes to go Aberdour"s luck ran out, a saved shot falling to Duncan Smith, who rapped it home from short range.

Three minutes later Ben Holton drove a 20-yard shot into the top left corner of Aberdour"s goal making it 4-2 for the visitors and some of the fight seemed to go out of the home team.

Glenorchy"s Scott MacIntyre sealed the points with a goal from the edge of the penalty area on 88 minutes.

The Argyll side maintain their 100 per cent record this season but Aberdour can take some satisfaction from being the first team to score against them.

Next week Aberdour make the short journey to Glasgow to take on Glasgow Mid Argyll.

Aberdour"s under-12s finished fourth at the recent national indoor finals in Perth.

The side started well with a 2-0 win against a strong Lochaber team and topped their group after wins against Lochgilphead and Lochcarron and a draw with Portree.

In the semi-final they came up against defending champions Park, from Oban, and lost 2-0.

The third/fourth place play-off proved to be a game too far, with Aberdour losing out 1-0 to Lochaber.

Nevertheless, club coach Lisa Norman paid tribute to their efforts, saying, 'The team came knowing it was going to be tough and to finish top of the group was a feat in itself.

'All the players were excellent.'

The club also fielded an under-10 team at the tournament and they gained invaluable experience in drawing against Meadowburn and Lochgilphead and losing narrowly to eventual winners Newtonmore.
