ABERDOUR Shinty Club and Glenurquhart served up some first class entertainment in their Sutherland Cup, second round tie at Silver Sands on Saturday.
The home side won the toss and elected to play down the slope but it was Glenurquhart who made the first real chance of the game when David Stewart found space to get a shot away from the edge of the penalty area.
Aberdour keeper Tom Bowerman palmed the ball out of the air and hit it to safety.
As the game progressed, Aberdour started to take the game to the visitors and for a 15-minute spell the men from Drumnadrochit were on the back foot.
During this period Doug Newsom and Ally Hutt both came close to scoring for Aberdour while their strike partner Joe Dunton battled for every loose ball around the D.
Agonisingly for the home side the goal would not come and on 37 minutes Glenurquhart took the lead, somewhat against the run of play, when Andrew Crichton scored from 15 yards.
Aberdour continued to attack and five minutes later a golden opportunity fell to wing centre Ross Nicol but his 25-yard effort went just over the bar.
The goal seemed to settle Glenurquhart"s nerves and they played with more fluency as the second half opened.
Within two minutes of the restart, a close range shot from Crichton left Aberdour keeper Bowerman helpless and the visitors were two goals ahead.
The tide of the match turned and Aberdour found themselves chasing the game. Glenurquhart were able to defend slightly deeper and the home side found it difficult to create clear chances.
The visitors continued to use the full width of the park, hitting the ball into space for their forwards to run on to.
Aberdour"s defence were unable to prevent Stuart Morrison from adding a third goal on 62 minutes when the ball broke to him 15 yards out.
Aberdour replaced Joe Dunton with substitute Ruaridh Reid in a bid to freshen up the attack but it was the visitors who grabbed the fourth goal through Calum Fraser on 83 minutes.
Despite losing 4-0, Aberdour put up a magnificent fight and if one or two of their first half chances had been taken, the character of the match – and perhaps the outcome – would have been quite different.
Next week Aberdour will be back on league duty when they take on Col Glen at Silver Sands.
The club"s under-12 and under-10 teams won three out of four major trophies on Sunday.
The under-12s won the U/12 Central Scotland Outdoor and Indoor leagues while the under-10s won the U/10 Central Outdoor league.
Coach Lisa Norman said, 'All four teams have competed regularly since last September in the Central Scotland Indoor and Outdoor leagues.
"All the players in all age groups have come on massively and are a credit to themselves and the club.'
