Who are West Fife's sports stars of 2008?

THE closing date for nominations for the 2008 Dunfermline & West Fife sports awards is Friday 14th November.

Each year the sports council honours the individuals young and old, coaches, teams and volunteers who put West Fife on the sporting map.

The blue riband award is the West Fife sports personality of the year, given to the outstanding sports person in Dunfermline and West Fife over the past 12 months.

The Asda St Leonard"s trophy is handed over to the young sports personality of the year, for youngsters aged 16 and under whose standard of performance has improved in 2008.

Team sports are recognised with two awards – the Benny Hutton team award for an over-16 team that has brought distinction to its club, sport and Dunfermline and West Fife and the Rotary Club of Dunfermline junior team of the year award for under-16s.

There"s the Carnegie Dunfermline Trust centenary masters award for the outstanding male or female athlete aged 35 or over and the East Kilbride Sports Council award for the individual athlete with a disability who has achieved significant progress in their sport during 2008.

The top coach will be presented with the Sport Tayside and Fife sports coach of the year award, while there will also be a special services to sport award for the individual in Dunfermline and West Fife who has given long term and outstanding service to their sport, helping to foster and develop the sport locally.

Nominees must be resident within Dunfermline and West Fife or a member of a club currently affiliated to the sports council, except in the team awards, where 25 per cent of the team may be from outwith Fife.

Candidates may be nominated for one category only and people who derive their livelihood from taking part in competitive sport are not eligible.

Sports personality of the year – Eilidh Child (athletics). Young sports personality of the year – Natasha Thomson (fencing). Senior team of the year – Spartan gymnasts. Junior team of the year – Aberdour Shinty Club under-12s. Coach of the year – Garrie Roberts (swimming). Disabled athlete of the year – Andrew Lindsay (swimming). Masters award – Andrea Gellan (open water swimming). Services to sport – Rona Gerrard (fencing and horse riding).
