ABERDOUR Shinty Club is preparing to throw a 10th anniversary birthday bash that will take founder Lisa Norman back to where it all began.

Norman brought shinty to the village as part of her university course requirement to introduce a different type of sport to a new area.

Ten years later and the club are competing in their first season in the second tier of the national shinty league, South Division One.

And to celebrate a decade of growth, Aberdour seconds will compete in the Bullough Cup this Saturday against Kyles Athletic who hold a special place in Norman's heart.

She said, "Kyles is where I first learned of and played shinty.

"If I hadn't gone there then I wouldn't have brought shinty back to the east coast with me, so it's nice that we've managed to tie it all back up with a game this weekend. They are a team close to my heart.

"The time has gone so quickly and I don't think I could've dreamed we would ever have come so far in 10 years.

"I was just imagining a couple of junior teams and some Saturdays here and there.

"Last weekend, on Friday night I was in Kingussie with the under-14s, Saturday I was in Glasgow with the first team and Sunday I was back in Aberdour seeing the under-14s beat Oban Celtic in the Ken MacMaster cup." Last Saturday Aberdour went down 7-2 to Glasgow Mid-Argyle in South League Division with consolation goals from Doug Newsom and Ruaridh Reid.

Aberdour had levelled the match at 2-2 before two goals in two minutes saw Glasgow pull away.

Lisa said, "After that our heads just dropped and we never really recovered.

"I think we just lost our focus and got drawn too much into trying to play them at their game instead of playing our own game." The itinerary for this Saturday's celebrations includes: 10.30am-12.30pm - under-10s, under-12s and under-14s six-a-side.

1.15pm - Aberdour seconds vs Kyle seconds in the Bullough Cup, with a girls' demo match to follow.

A barbecue and beer tent and stalls will also be available all afternoon.

From 8pm-12am there is a ceilidh tent at Silver Sands with music from the Gallivanters Ceilidh Band.

Everybody is welcome throughout the day with tickets for the ceilidh available on the door, through committee members or at Aberdour Hotel.
