CARNEGIE Swimming Club failed to retain their trophy but their swimmers smashed 10 British and Scottish records and collected numerous medals and titles.

The 38-strong side were pipped to the Scottish National Age Group title in Aberdeen by Warrender Baths Club but there was plenty to be happy about.

In the 15-year-old boys’ section, Craig McLean won six gold medals, claimed three new British records in the 50 metres, 100m and 200m freestyle and set two new Scottish records at 100m and 200m backstroke. In the girls 15-16 years’ section, Tain Bruce (16) claimed golds and set four new Scottish records in the 100m and 200m butterfly, the 200m Individual Medley (IM) and 50m freestyle.

Both won trophies for best performance in their categories, Keir Edgar (12) also won a trophy for best performance in his age group for the 200m IM. Kirsty Simpson (18) also smashed the Scottish age group record in winning the 100m backstroke title. The Carnegie team was drawn from the performance and performance development squads and in the 13 years and under section there were bronze medals for Greig Rowe and Callum Barnes in the 100m and 200m breaststroke respectively.

Edgar’s performance in finishing fifth in the 200m freestyle, sixth in the 100m and 200m backstroke and seventh in the 200m IM won him the Sharp trophy and his 10th place finish in the 1500m freestyle broke an East District record set in 2005.

In the 14-years age group Ruairidh Lawless won two silvers in the 400m and 800m freestyle while McLean and Bruce helped Carnegie dominate the 15-year-old boys and 15-16-year-old girls’ categories.

McLean broke a Scottish record that had stood since 2003 and his sixth gold came in the 400m IM, with silver in the 100m breaststroke.

Bruce’s 200m IM swim smashed the record set by current Commonwealth medley champ Hannah Miley nine years ago. As well as her four gold medals, she picked up bronze in the 100m backstroke.

Samantha Caulfield collected silver medals in the 100m freestyle and breaststroke events and the 200m IM, with bronze in the 50m freestyle.

In the 16-17-year-old boys’ competition, Jack Szaranek won bronze in the 50m freestyle.

In the girls’ 17 and over section, Simpson’s record-breaking swim was accompanied by bronze in the 200m backstroke and 800m freestyle events.

Chelsea Lawson retained her title in the 200m backstroke and won bronze in the 100m backstroke.

Rachael O’Donnell, still in hard training for the Commonwealth Games, finished second in the 200m IM and third in the 100m and 200m breaststroke.

Zoe Mitchell collected a bronze in the 1500m freestyle.

Craig Bowman kept up his preparation for the European Junior Championships with a win in the 200m butterfly, silver in the 100m backstroke and 200m IM, and bronze in the 100m freestyle.

Mark Szaranek won five gold medals – the 100m butterfly, breaststroke and freestyle, and the 200m backstroke and IM.

He was second in the 200m butterfly and 400m freestyle. The team of McLean, Jack and Mark Szaranek and Bowman won the 4x100m freestyle, 4x200m freestyle and the 4x100m medley relays, displays that keep them at the top of the British rankings. The girls team of Simpson, Bruce, O’Donnell and Caulfield won both the shorter distance relays and were second in the 4x200m freestyle – Lawson replaced Bruce for that event.

Head coach John Szaranek said, “This was a tremendous performance by the swimmers with some stunning individual performances.

“A few of our older swimmers will move away from the club as they head to university after the summer.

“They did us proud this weekend, as they have done throughout their swimming careers.

“However, our younger swimmers demonstrated just how well placed they are to take the club forward.”
