THERE were more great swims and medals for Carnegie’s swimmers during the second round of the East District Age Group Championships at the Michael Woods Centre in Glenrothes last weekend.

All the events were 200 metres, with heats followed by finals for the fastest eight. The best swim came from 11-year-old Ellie Turner. In winning the 12 and under 200m backstroke title she set a new 11 years East District age group record of 2:31.07, the only record of the championship set after four days of competition.

Tain Bruce showed her dominance over 200m butterfly, finishing first in the 16 and over category, just outside the Scottish junior record time she set the previous week at the Coast Grand Prix. Samantha Caulfield finished third in this event. They finished in the same order in the 16 and over backstroke and second and third in the 200m breaststroke.

Lauren Sutherland showed her breaststroke credentials with a win in the 15 years age group. Lauren was also third in the 200m backstroke. Jessica McKee was third in the 12 and under freestyle and Eilidh Collyer (14) was also third in her event.

Keir Edgar (pictured) won the 13 years 200m backstroke and James Collyer was third in the 15 years age group. Keir also won the 200m freestyle, James Beattie (14) was third, and Fraser Beeby (15) was also third. Craig McLean won the 16 and over 200m freestyle, his only event of the weekend as he had been training with the GB podium potential squad on Saturday. His time was just outside the Scottish junior record time he set last weekend in Aberdeen.

In breaststroke, Fraser Beeby (15) finished second and Craig Barnes, fresh from setting his first East District junior record last weekend in this event, was second in the 16+ age group. Owen Strachan was just touched out to get second in the 14 years butterfly, having led all the way in a very tough event, with James Beattie finishing third. Ruairidh Lawless was also third in the 15 years final, just ahead of James Collyer and Fraser Beeby in fourth and fifth.

Finalists in the girls’ 200m butterfly included Levi Wilson (12 and under – fourth), Eilidh Collyer (14) – seventh, in the 15 years age group Lauren Sutherland (fifth), Claire Moloney (sixth) and Claire Lee (eighth) and Erin Rafferty (16+ years, eighth).

In the freestyle, Ellie Turner was sixth. In the backstroke, Jessica McKee was seventh, Eilidh Collyer fifth and Megan McGhee seventh. In breaststroke, Niamh Moloney and Ellie Turner (12 and under) were seventh and eighth, Megan McGhee and Eilidh Collyer, seventh and eighth, and Kelsey Robertson and Claire Moloney were fifth and sixth respectively. Lauren and Sarah Donnelly finished fourth and eighth in the 15 years freestyle and Samantha Caulfield was fifth in the 16 and over freestyle. Sarah Donnelly was sixth in backstroke.

Finalists for the boys, in the 200m backstroke, included Callum Hillis (12 and under – fourth), Greig Rowe (13 years – fifth), James Beattie, Mathew King, and Owen Strachan (14 years, fifth, seventh and eighth respectively), Fraser Beeby and Ruairidh Lawless (15 years – fourth and sixth respectively) and Cameron Nelson (16+ – fourth).

Callum Hillis also made the final of the 200m breaststroke (12 and under – fourth), Keir Edgar was fourth (13 years), James Beattie fifth, James Collyer (15 years – fourth) and Cameron Nelson (16+, eighth).

In the butterfly, Callum Hillis was fifth, Harris Bruce (age 13 – fourth), Keir Edgar (eighth), Craig Barnes (fifth). In freestyle, Callum Hillis finished fifth, Greig Rowe fifth, Matthew King seventh, James Collyer and Ruairidh Lawless were fifth and sixth respectively, and Jack Szaranek (16+ years – fourth).

There were good PB swims from Neave Davidson, Bartosz Gacki, Keiran Rafferty, Lucy Ross, Aiden Mitchell, Niamh Moloney, Rebecca Braid, Eilidh Lister, Andrew England, Anna Fullarton, Eilidh Richmond, Joanna Rae, Eilidh Gaughan, Greig Reid, Erin Clark, and Lucy Thomson.

Overall, the club came away with one record and 22 medals won by 14 of the swimmers and numerous final placings and impressive personal best times. The club maintains its position of second overall in the team event, with one more weekend of swimming to come.
