YOUNG swimmers from Carnegie’s minnows, sharks, orcas, junior development and PD2 squads won the Top Club award at their mini meet last month.

Swimmers aged seven to 11 came away with an impressive array of personal best times, top six placings, a Top Boy award as well as the Top Club award.

In the boys’ 7/8 years competition, Thomas McElwee took a fifth place award in the 100 metres Individual Medley (IM) and team-mate Gregor Hay took sixth. Seven-year-old Jacques Higgs did well in his first swim at this event finishing eighth. For the young Carnegie girls, Abbie Hughes, Faye Hunter, Charlotte Stewart and Megan Hay all swam new personal best times.

In the nine years age group 100m IM, Mathew Dewar swam a new PB as did all the Carnegie girls, Zara-Boo Nicholson, Sophie Reid, Imogen Paton, Hebe Weavers, Molly Fairfield, Eilidh Oliver, Freya Nisbet, Evie Menzies, Alyx Innes, Gemma Blyth, Rebecca Shelley, Natalie Penny and Zahra Kerbalai. Gregor Hay then went on to take another sixth-place finish in the boys’ 25m fly.

Thomas McElwee took an impressive silver medal in the boys’ 7/8 years 50m back crawl with a new PB time while team-mate Abbie Hughes was sixth in the girls’ event and Imogen Paton was fifth in the nine-year-old girls age group.

In the breaststroke individual events, Gregor Hay this time took the silver medal in the 7/8 years boys with team-mate Thomas McElwee winning a bronze medal. In the girls’ 7/8 years age group, Charlotte Stewart finished in a fine fifth place with a new personal best time. In the older age group for the girls, Sophie Reid (nine) was fifth, also in a new PB time.

In the 50m freestyle, Thomas McElwee was fourth after a fine swim in the boys’ 7/8 years age group, while Zara Boo Nicholson (nine) took bronze with a fine swim and new PB time in the girls’ race.

In the mixed relays, the Carnegie 7/8 years A Team of Gregor Hay, Abbie Hughes, Jacques Higgs and Thomas McElwee took a fine silver medal to round off a good morning for the youngsters. The nine years Carnegie A team, of Cameron Lister, Sophie Reid, Eilidh Oliver and Zara Boo Nicholson just missed out on a medal finishing in fourth place.

Also swimming new personal best times were Cameron Lister, Taran Murphy, Kai Wilson, Alexander Wilson, Orla Humphrey, Caitlin Stocks, Lewis Humphrey, Louis Vesco, Calder Murphy, Ross Hunter, Jonathan Paton and Connor Minogue.

In the afternoon session, Carnegie’s more experienced 10- and 11-year-olds olds burst into action and PD2 swimmer Cameron Stirling had a fantastic afternoon, winning all his individual events, taking golds in the 100m IM, 50m fly, back crawl, breaststroke and freestyle as well as being part of the gold medal-winning 11 years mixed relay team. Cameron then lifted the Top Boy award to cap a superb afternoon’s swimming.

Joining Cameron on the podium in the afternoon session was fellow 11-year-old Saul Paton as well as 10-year-olds Alex Hay and Finlay Hay who lifted a handful of medals between them in the younger age group.

For the Carnegie girls, Levi Wilson (11) had a good afternoon along with strong performances and podium appearances from Rebecca Braid, Morven Lister and Freya Bisht. Levi was just pipped to the Top Girl award.

Rounding off the afternoon, the 10 years mixed relay A team of Finlay Hay, Wendy Cheng, Alex Hay and Olivia Beattie won a superb silver medal behind a strong Grangemouth team.

The Carnegie 11 years A mixed relay team of Freya Bisht, Cameron Stirling, Morven Lister and Rebecca Braid then demolished the rest of the field, winning the gold medal in a superb time.
