CRAIG MCLEAN was unstoppable in the pool as the Carnegie swimmer smashed 11 individual Scottish records and claimed five titles.

The teenager added more records with the relay team as they picked up a further three titles at the Scottish National Short Course Championships in Edinburgh.

Overall, the Carnegie performance swimmers emerged from the Royal Commonwealth Pool with 20 new national records and 10 Scottish junior titles.

The prestigious event attracted Commonwealth champions such as Dan Wallace and Hannah Miley but it was McLean who caught the eye with three days of fine swims from 12th to 14th December.

He started with a record breaking heat swim in the first event, the 50 metres freestyle, and his time of 22.69 seconds was a Scottish junior and 16-year-old record.

That evening in the final he took the Scottish junior title and claimed three further records on the first day.

The most dramatic was his 200m backstroke swim where the lowered the previous Scottish junior record by almost three seconds to 1 minute 57.70 seconds.

McLean added the 100m individual medley title on the first day – in a record time of 56.23s – and together with Craig Barnes, Cameron Nelson and Jack Szaranek, took the 200m medley relay in another new record.

His lead off leg of 25.75s on the 50m backstroke was a Scottish junior and age group record.

By close of play on the Friday, he had broken 10 individual Scottish records and contributed to two relay records.

On the Saturday he won the 100m freestyle title and took another Scottish junior record in the 200m freestyle relay with Szaranek, Barnes and Aaron Gillan.

There was no rest on the Sunday with the 100m backstroke title – 54.63s was another record time – and McLean, Barnes, Szaranek and Nelson were first in the 400m freestyle relay.

In the process they reduced the national record by more than four seconds and completed a clean sweep of the relay titles.

Records continued to tumble with Tain Bruce setting a new national mark in the 200m butterfly and she also won the 100m butterfly and 400m IM titles.

Samantha Caulfield set new personal bests as she reached a clutch of finals and the girls relay team of Bruce, Lauren Sutherland, Tara Haworth and Erin Rafferty just missed out on the title.

Barnes and Sutherland also made finals.
