MICHAEL PATON admits he has found it tough being in and out of the Pars side, but says he has been assured he remains a “massive player” for the club.

The 27-year-old watched on from the stands as Dunfermline extended their unbeaten run to nine matches by drawing with St Mirren on Saturday, but is determined to fight his way back into the side.

Paton was one of Allan Johnston’s most influential players last season – featuring in 41 matches – but he has found game time more difficult to come by this season, with his last start coming in November’s Scottish Cup tie at Buckie Thistle.

With a visit to League One Alloa Athletic on the horizon in that competition this weekend, it may open a door for the talented midfielder, who told Press Sport: “I’m disappointed to be left out, but the manager has said to me that I’m still a massive player for the club. I love it here; it’s a massive club. The fans are great in that they speak to you, wonder why you’re not playing and wish you all the best, and we’ve got a good, tight dressing room. That helps a bit.

“I know I can bring a lot to the club, but it is one of those things. We’ve got a squad of around 25 and we’re on our best run since the start of the season, so you don’t think the manager would look to change it, and so boys are going to have to get left out.

“Any player is going to be disappointed if they’re not playing, but you’ve got to be professional and show the right attitude.”

By this stage last season, the former Queen of the South man had played 28 times in all competitions, compared to the 15 appearances he has made in this campaign.

Paton acknowledged that is testament to the strength in depth that his manager has at his disposal, and continued: “We have a big squad but I feel ready to play. The boys who have been playing need to be at it because, if they’re not, I’ll be chapping on the door. That’s the way it is and, to be fair, the boys who are on the bench or in the stand not playing are more than capable of stepping in.

“I have to keep doing what I am good at so there are no excuses when I get my chance.

“It’s about how you react to it.”
