ASK John Herron to ‘show us yer medals’ and he’ll tell you about 12 trophies he won at Celtic by the time he was 21 – and why he walked away from almost guaranteed silverware for the good of his career.

Joining his boyhood heroes at the age of eight, the midfielder hoovered up titles and cups at youth level and progressed into the Hoops first team squad.

Herron said: “I won six doubles at Celtic. I think I’m the only person that’s done it so for me that was excellent. “You can win as much as you want at that level but the main thing is to get into the first team and play football.

“I was at Celtic for 13 years but the reason I left was I may be young but I’m not stupid. They were bringing in top players and it was going to be hard to get any games. The main thing for any young player is to play.”

Desire to prove himself led him to leave Parkhead for an ill-fated move to Blackpool – a deal that has now been ripped up. He didn’t get on with the Seasiders manager Gary Bowyer and spent time on loan at Cowdenbeath in 2015 before joining Dunfermline in August.

He said: “I didn’t want to go back to Blackpool, everyone here knows that. I had two years on the contract, this year and a year’s option, and we’ve mutually agreed I won’t be going back.

“I’m here until the summer and then we’ll see what happens. I’ve a few options but now I’m just concentrating on playing. I’ve had niggling injuries so I’m still getting my confidence back, I’ve got a lot more to give.”

That includes goals and Herron netted his first for the club on Saturday before celebrating with Sandy Clark.

He laughed: “There’s been a bit of banter between us. He’s been saying I don’t shoot enough so all week in training I’ve been scoring a lot of goals!

“He said he fancied me to score today and, OK, it was the head rather than the foot but they all count.”

Herron hasn’t ruled out a longer stay and said: “I’m loving it here just now.

“It was the last hour or so (of the transfer window) that I heard of Dunfermline’s interest and the manager phoned me. I knew they were a big club and when I saw the players we have, the full-time training and all the attributes in the squad, I thought we should be much higher than we were. We’ve got a great squad harmony, that’s 11 games unbeaten now and you don’t get that without good team spirit.”
