Pars' reward for knocking out United's city rivals Dundee in a memorable 3-1 win on Tuesday night is a trip to Tannadice for the first time since the club were relegated from the Premier League in 2012.
The tie will also see former Athletic defender Callum Morris and loan striker Jordan Moore potentially come up against their former team-mates as they bid to avoid becoming a second Tayside giantkilling for Allan Johnston's high-fliers.
Dunfermline's last visit to Tannadice on League Cup duty came in 2008, when a late Scott Robertson goal sent Jim McIntyre's First Division side out in a 1-0 defeat.
The tie will be played on 22nd or 23rd September.
The full draw is as follows: Kilmarnock v Hearts Livingston v Inverness Caledonian Thistle Ross County v Falkirk Rangers v St Johnstone Celtic v Raith Rovers Morton v Motherwell Dundee United v Dunfermline Hibs v Aberdeen.
