WHEN the Press asked former Rolling Stone Bill Wyman the best thing about playing in his Rhythm Kings band he couldn't resist a veiled dig at former bandmate Mick Jagger.

"In my mind there's no prima donnas in this group.

"There's no-one trying to take charge, be the boss, show off and all that stuff, like in some bands I could mention," he laughed.

"Everybody is for everybody - which is why we're still together after all these years.

"Everyone at our show goes home with a happy face and that's what counts."

The bassist brings his band of virtuoso musicians to the Alhambra next week, which is likely to attract a discerning audience, from jazz lovers to old rock 'n' rollers.

"We play a whole mixture of jazz, blues, early rock, R 'n B, country and even reggae," he said.

"That's what I love about the band - the variety."

The Rhythm Kings are touring to support their new Best Of compilation - 21 tracks covering the group's 12-year history.

Their initial formation came about after Bill left the Stones after 31 years.

He said playing in arguably the biggest and best ever rock 'n' roll band was preventing him from pursuing other passions.

"I had so many other interests I wanted to do," he explained.

"If I stayed in the band I would never have got a chance to do them.

"I got married, have three beautiful daughters in their teens - a dangerous time - written six books, have photo exhibitions around the world and have my restaurant (Sticky Fingers in London)."

And Wyman (73), who Maxim magazine included in its 'Living Sex Legends' list, after it was reputed he slept with more than 1000 women, is taking things a bit more slowly these days - with a metal detector.

"It's fun to do and a good way to clear your mind.

"I recently found a silver Iron Age coin from 20 AD at a field near my house," he said.

"Some people, like Eric Clapton and Gary Brooker (of Procol Harum fame) like to go fishing.

"I do metal detecting, which I call land fishing. You never know what the next bite will be.

"Those two just sit there waiting for a bite ... I go walking for it."

Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings play the Alhambra on Thursday 19th November. Doors 7.30pm. For ticket information call the box office on 740384.
