WEST Fife band OSKAR overcame a formidable field from all over Scotland to win the first Make Your Mark talent competition at PJ Molloys.

The feat was all the more notable because the band was only formed in February and had just played one gig before entering the contest.

OSKAR are singer David Stevens, Grant Allan (guitar), Andrew Davidson (drums), Darren Hood (bass) and Conor Young (guitar).

They had played in various local bands before coming together this year and adding their secret weapon, the distinctive vocals of David.

“We got Dove in because we’d heard him singing with his previous band when they supported us,” said Conor.

The band members come from all over West Fife including Dunfermline, Crossgates, Inverkeithing.

There were over 50 acts sent demos in for the competition and over 30 were selected to take part.

Conor said, “We entered it before we’d even played a gig. We just thought we’d go for it, get our name out there and that it would be a good platform for us.” For their first gig, a week before the first heat, they supported Catfish and the Bottlemen at PJs. They later went to Balado to cheer them on the T-Break stage and next year hope they will be performing instead of in the crowd.

“We’re building up a following and winning this competition has helped generate interest,” Conor added.

The band will be recording an EP at the Substation, Rosyth, this month and launching it at a gig at PJs shortly afterwards.

Calum Miller, of PJs, said, “The competition has been a great success, The standard has been tremendous and our aim of bringing the bands together has worked.

"A lot of the musicians in the different bands have become good friends through it and it has created the kind of buzz in the local music scene that we had hoped for.

"When you have a town where the bands work together and support each other it can pay off for them."
