DUNFERMLINE is rallying together in a bid to celebrate much-loved photographer Jo Freeman’s legacy with a competition to display one of her photos in Tesco.

Last month, the Press reported that the new Carnegie Drive Tesco store featured a poster promoting St Andrews, rather than Dunfermline.

Suggestions for a competition to find a more suitable alternative began to flood in, with the most popular being a photograph taken by Jo Freeman, whose Dunfermline Photos Facebook page captured the hearts and imaginations of the people of Dunfermline, who were deeply saddened when she passed away last month.

Thomas Moffat, who worked with Jo at Visit Dunfermline, thinks the tribute would be nothing less than what she deserves.

“It’s a great idea,” he said. “Jo was part of the town and started the trend – everyone does photography now. I don’t think people realised on what a grand level Dunfermline came across.

“I think it would be really nice. She took such a variety of pictures of both people and buildings.

"There are so many and it inspires other people too – there’s a Kincardine Photos page now and it’s getting people involved.

“She really installed some civic pride. Nobody had done it before, it was a glass half empty but with Dunfermline Photos Jo showed people how enriched the town is.

“I’d be totally behind a competition. Jo was a director of Visit Dunfermline and was very much behind showing people the positive, so it would be nice to highlight that and keep her legacy going.” Dunfermline North councillor Helen Law was also keen for the idea to take shape and thinks that a competition would be the perfect way for people to choose from Jo’s photos.

“She took fabulous pictures,” she said. “I think it would be absolutely great to do this – it would be a great memorial to Jo and the work she put in.

“It would be a fitting tribute to her and a great chance to use her pictures. I’m hoping we can convince Tesco that this is a good idea.” Richard Holligan, corporate affairs manager for Tesco Scotland, said, “Tesco is committed to supporting the people of Dunfermline.

"Since the store opened in October we’ve contributed to a number of local causes including the town’s Christmas lights and a partnership with DAFC.

“We’re always happy to look at additional ways in which we can best help the whole community.”
