A TEENAGER from Kingseat is celebrating singing success after winning two trophies at the Fife Festival of Music.

Leah Duncan-Karrim, 17, of Keirsbeath Court, is no stranger to the stage and took part in the festival for the fourth time this year, coming away with two top honours as she scooped first place for the under-18 light opera/musical/Gilbert and Sullivan class and the under-18 duet class with partner Brandon Low.

The soprano has been taking singing lessons since she was 12 and was delighted to come away from the event with a win.

She said: “It was really good, I enjoyed it. I took part in four classes altogether and liked them all.

“My singing started when I took part in a Burns competition in Primary 5. I got to nationals in P5 and P7 and came second.

“I was recommended by an opera singer that I should take lessons so I got started.

"I do different kinds of singing but opera is my favourite.”

Leah has been a member of Scottish Opera’s "Connect" Youth Chorus for the past three years and works with them in Glasgow every second weekend from September to April, where she rehearses and performs in various shows.

She is also entering her second year with the National Youth Choir of Scotland, as well as singing with Fife Opera and Bel Canto singers in Kirkcaldy.

The Queen Anne High School student will be putting singing in the back seat for a year, after being offered a scholarship by Strathclyde University in conjunction with the Chinese government to study Mandarin in Tianjin from September.

She said: “We went to China on a school trip last year and now I’ve been offered a scholarship. The focus won’t be on singing over there but it’s definitely an ambition of mine to do it in the future.”
