TRAFFIC queues look likely with £1million of roadworks and carriageway improvements due to get under way in West Fife.

Delays on major routes look inevitable with large sections of Halbeath Road and Pilmuir Street in Dunfermline set to be resurfaced in July.

Work will also close Ferrytoll Road in Rosyth for five weeks with Fife Council's drive to improve roads starting when schools break for the summer holidays.

However, planned roadworks for the Promenade in Limekilns have been put back until later in the year after concerns were raised by local residents and businesses.

A £70,000 resurfacing job in the village was due to last for two weeks, from July 4 to 15, but this has now been postponed.

One of the biggest projects will see resurfacing taking place and temporary traffic lights on Halbeath Road, from the rail bridge near The Elizabethan to the roundabout at Fife College.

The cost is £580,000 and the work is now scheduled to begin on July 18. The replacement of traffic signals on Halbeath Road, which will cost £120,000, will be done at the same time.

Once that's finished, Fife Council will turn their attention to Pilmuir Street, another bus route and major artery through the town.

The £150,000 resurfacing work was due to begin in mid-July and last three weeks, with the road closed from the junction with Arthur Street to Winterthur Lane, but the start date now depends on the progress of the work on Halbeath Road.

Resurfacing at Ferrytoll Road will cost £150,000 with the road closed from June 27 to July 29.

And four Toucan crossings are due to be installed over the summer, at a cost of £160,000, in the Dunlin Drive area of Dunfermline.

A statement from the council said: "The main projects are Halbeath Road and Pilmuir Street.

"We will be phasing these roadworks to make sure traffic flows as easily as possible in the area rather than having them taking place at the same time.

"The work on Halbeath Road will begin on July 18 and the Pilmuir Street works will be programmed in to take place once the works on Halbeath Road are complete."

The projects are included in the council's transportation works programme.

Other planned resurfacing jobs for 2016-17, that do not yet have start dates, are: Main Street, Townhill, £200,000; Whitefield Road, Dunfermline, £180,000; Cairncubie Road, Townhill, £150,000; Wedderburn Crescent, Dunfermline, £110,000; Appin Crescent, Dunfermline, £120,000 and Wedderburn Street, Dunfermline, £85,000.
