THE curtains closed on another successful Aberdour Festival at the weekend, following 10 days of non-stop arts, culture and fun.

The 33rd edition of the “best small festival in the world”, which celebrated Roald Dahl, the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death, and the Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design, saw residents and visitors alike enjoying an eclectic range of entertainment and activities.

From Classical Meets Jazz and the ever-popular Donkey Brae Run – which this year saw a field of more than 400 taking part – to the village pet show and John Henderson's Backwoods Adventure, there was something fun for everyone.

Among the big names at this year's festival were best-selling author Jenny Colgan, illustrator Nick Sharratt, world-jazz guitarist and composer David MacGregor and Cuban classical guitarist Ahmed Dickinson Cárdenas, as well as Dunfermline musicians Amy Louise Rogers and Moonlight Zoo, winners of the Press' Live Music Award 2015.

There were also talks by Dr Ken Stewart on Arctic explorer Dr John Rae, and Aberdour author Diana Maxwell, who launched the new edition of her book on HMS Tarlair and the Hawkcraig Admiralty Experimental Establishment Station.

Other intriguing events included a Lego stop-motion animation class, 'Posh Princesses and Polite Knights' – which featured fencing! – and workshops on graffiti, and circus skills.

Sports-wise, Easter Aberdour swept the board this year, beating Wester in all the events – cricket, football and all three tug-of-war challenges.

Festival chair Philomena Oldfield said: “The feedback that we've had is that people were delighted with the selection, and how kind and helpful the volunteers and helpers were. Every single evening event was really well-attended.

“The Rockin' Bingo was fantastic, and Jimmy Rainbow, who used to have a restaurant in the village, ran the disco.

“The music events went down very well – we also Break the Butterfly from Fife, and Heron Valley, a lively young Scottish ceilidh band.

“The gin-tasting was a lot of fun – there were probably a few sore heads in the morning!

“It's now time for a wee rest, then it's time to start planning for next year.”
