WINTRY weather over the past 24 hours has caused the cables of the new Queensferry Crossing to vibrate and swing according to roads chiefs.

But engineers insist this is to be expected while the bridge is under construction.

Transport Scotland responded to the Press after villagers in North Queensferry were awoken by loud banging coming from the new Queensferry Crossing in the early hours of Friday morning.

The cabling on the new bridge, which is set to open in May 2017, appears to have come loose in the high winds.

Several locals reported this to the Press, with one sending in the above video.

A Transport Scotland spokesman said: “Our contractors, FCBC, have informed us that the recent high winds and snow have caused some of the cable stays to vibrate and oscillate.

"This is a well-known phenomenon during the construction phase of this type of structure and it can result in some noise.

“Once the construction is complete, these cables stays will be bundled and restrained to prevent such movement and noise.

"In the meantime, FCBC have put in place temporary mitigation measures to decrease the potential for noise disturbance from these cables. Both FCBC and Transport Scotland apologise for any inconvenience caused to local residents.”
