THE first photograph in this week’s trip down West Fife’s Memory Lane is of the display of a German Messerschmitt aeroplane that was shot down in October 1940 in Essex.
Such aircraft were then displayed to the public around the country to boost morale and raise funds during the early days of the Second World War. As can be seen, it attracted interest and a large crowd when it appeared at the gates of Pittencrieff Park in Dunfermline.
The second image is of the flats in Trondheim Parkway on the Abbeyview housing estate. In their time, they were regarded as highly sought- after accommodation and featured trend-setting electric underfloor heating.
Named after Dunfermline’s Norwegian twin town, Trondheim, they were opened by the Mayor of Trondheim and attracted great interest in the Norwegian press at the time.
Their later reputation in Dunfermline plummeted and received a lot of negative press, leading to their demolition and replacement by low-rise housing which now forms a link to Dunfermline’s Duloch housing estate.
More photographs like these can be seen at facebook.com/olddunfermline and also in Dunfermline Carnegie Library and Galleries.
