The car park at Dunfermline Queen Margaret Station will be closed on the next two weekends.

Work starts tomorrow on a £75,000 project to add an extra 25 parking spaces to meet "increasing commuter demand".

A statement confirmed: "Dunfermline Queen Margaret Station car park will be closed on two consecutive weekends, 23rd to 24th September and 30th September to 1st October for construction works.

"We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and remind drivers not to leave their cars in the car park overnight on Friday 22nd and Friday 29th September.

"The station will remain open and continue to operate to normal timetables during the improvements. Customers arriving at the station by car should allow extra time to catch their train during this period."

The work is being jointly funded by Fife Council and the Scotrail Alliance, with the City of Dunfermline area committee agreeing their half of the £75,000 funding on Tuesday.

Committee convener, Councillor Helen Law, said: "I am happy to see additional parking spaces being delivered at Dunfermline Queen Margaret Station to meet increasing commuter demand.

"This will be a great benefit to the local community.

“I am pleased funding from the City of Dunfermline Area capital budget helped to secure the additional partnership funding that was required from the Scotrail Alliance.”

The Scotrail Alliance’s programmes and transformation director, Ian McConnell, said: “We’re building the best railway Scotland has ever had, and improved facilities for customers at our stations is a huge part of this.

“These additional spaces, combined with longer trains, more seats and better services, will all help us to achieve our aim of reducing the carbon footprint from door to door.”

Passengers driving to the station are asked to consider using the ‘park and walk’ car park at Bellyeoman Park (off Robertson Road).

They are also being asked not to park in the Queen Margaret Fauld estate during the works.

The statement added: "If possible, customers are asked to consider walking or cycling to the station and leave their cars at home.

"Some customers driving to catch a train at Dunfermline Queen Margaret Station may find it more convenient to use another station during the weekend closures."
