IT WAS the end of an era in Charlestown last week with the retiral of Jimmy Wilson and Janice McLennan.

The couple, both 63, have been in charge at the Sutlery shop and post office for more than 20 years and have decided it is now time to take it easy and put their feet up.

A special afternoon tea attended by friends and customers was held on Wednesday to mark their departure.

Having taking over the premises 22 years ago, Janice previously owned a food bar while Jimmy was a sports car broker.

“Life has changed over the years but Charlestown is still a bit old-fashioned so a lot has stayed the same,” said Janice. “We are sad to be retiring but we felt the time had come.

“We have both got heath issues and had to make the decision to get ourselves a bit of time. We have just been on holiday and are looking forward to more holidays.”

The majority of their 25-year relationship has been spent working in the Sutlery together and Janice said it had worked well.

“We just got on with things,” she said. “Jimmy has his thing and I do mine. I did the post office and the food and Jimmy did the stock, the buying and the cash and carry.

“We stay just along the road so we will see people and we will still go to the shop.”

Their farewell celebration was organised by Limekilns, Charlestown and Pattiesmuir Community Council who also carried out a collection among villagers and the couple were presented with flowers, a cake and money in recognition of their contribution to the community.
